Serving NL with Guaranteed Quality Pest Control Services for more than 50 Years
Fulfilling a lifelong dream to start his own business, Abraham J. Carter began what was then known as West Coast Pest Control in 1965. In the beginning, the company serviced the Corner Brook and Humber Valley area. As the time went, Mr. Carter expanded the business throughout the west and southwest coast of Newfoundland, including the Burgeo and Ramea areas. Business also began spreading to the east, such as the Baie Verte Peninsula.
When Mr. Carter started the business, the Corner Brook area was experiencing a serious problem with cockroaches. Through his early efforts, infestation outbreaks such as these were greatly curtailed. In the early years, services such as tree spraying and fumigating were provided. In 1969, Mr. Carter was asked to fumigate a shipment of lumber that was bound for Asia. It was a large and responsible undertaking, even being covered by the local news paper. Continuing into the 1970's, Mr. Carter did pest control work in a number of fish plants and other businesses in the Cape Breton region of Nova Scotia.
In 1972 Mr. Carter established a store in Corner Brook to sell Pest Control products to the public. This store continued for a number of years. It was also during this point, that Abraham's son, Donald, came on board to work with his father and help grow his pest control operation.
Abraham J. Carter died suddenly on September 2, 1972. The operation of the business was left to be managed by Donald. Donald quickly sought the help of Mr. Lewis Stratton, who joined the company to help manage the growth in Abraham's absence. The business continued to expand into many other parts of Newfound and Labrador. In 1976, Lewis Stratton established an office in the Grand Falls/Winsor region to cover the central and southern part of Newfoundland. In the late 1970's West Coast Pest Control merged with Modern Pest Control of St. John's, thus effectively becoming a full province wide operation. The company would go on to be managed as three separate entities in western, central, and eastern Newfoundland. Over the past 30 years the company has experienced many phases, but still continues to grow and run as a family business.
In 2011, Donald Carter retired from the pest control business, and the company was passed to Jonathan and Todd Flynn, both grandsons of company founder Abraham J. Carter. Modern Pest Control, as the oldest pest control company in Newfound and Labrador, continues to offer good quality service to residential, commercial, and industrial establishments throughout the province.
